This book was a great read, it was really eye-opening in bashing some of the common myths about childless women and questioning the 'norm' of motherhood. Many woman who don't want children are seen as selfish and feel weird or uncomfortable with their choice because all their lives they've been bombarded with the message that 'women are mothers'. Not all women have that maternal instinct, however. You're not some kind of freak if you don't want to hold every baby that you meet - everyone is different. This book discusses a group of older childless women, which is the only thing I really take offense with - is my decision not to have children not taken seriously just because I'm in my 20's? Not even women in their 30's are presented - all interviews in the book are with women in their 40's or older. It just seems like childless women get the "you'll change your mind!" line so frequently that they'd know better than to not take someone seriously about their decision based solely on age. At the same time, it was really interesting hearing from women in the 70's who made the choice not to have children - they were questioned constantly, and blatantly, about their choice back then. Some interesting ideas are presented, questioning the stereotype that all childless women have pets as surrogate children, that they feel their lives are somehow empty, or that they have to do more in the way of community service, charities, etc. to make up for their lack of children. Wrong! That is definitely not the case for the majority of the people interviewed here. It's refreshing that the author tries to disassociate being a women from the default societal assumption of being a mother, which comes across as a bit weird when she refers to 'not-mothers' instead of 'childless' (since many people who aren't mothers don't LACK anything, which is emphasized with the word childLESS'.) Anyway, great read for people with kids OR without - if you do have kids, but want to understand more about women who aren't mothers, this would be a great way to do that. And if you don't want to have children, or aren't sure, this is a great way to find out just how wrong all those stereotypes about you are.
