A fantastically detailed text full of glossy ultrasound images, "real-life" images of each fetus with varying conditions through various cross-sections post-delivery and excellent descriptions of both normal appearances and pathologies, it's difficult to come up short with this text. This text largely consists of normal ultrasound appearances, how to obtain the correct views and some of the common pitfalls operators make when scanning the fetal heart. This was very useful; particularly with the addition of various diagrams and images to suit all learning styles. The book then moves into a more detailed look at pathological appearances of the fetal heart and how to correctly visualise these. I particularly liked that the text included differential diagnosis and common syndromes which each heart condition might be associated with - very helpful for the everyday practitioner - something to keep your eyes peeled for in a clinical setting. In terms of a reference text for students or beginners, this book does have something to suit all levels. There are some very basic chapters designed to show the reader how to scan and how to achieve a particular view of the heart. However, the supporting evidence and the language used is possibly more suited to those familiar with heart anatomy already as this isn't largely touched on; assuming a level of knowledge of the reader. Despite this, most images are labelled to allow you to assess them at your own pace. Images are fantastic quality - and many of the images are accompanied by a diagram to help delineate scan appearances from anatomical appearances. I was also surprised to find a number of the heart anomalies were accompanied by further images of other conditions which might be associated with each defect. For example, there are scan images of clenched fists (Edwards Syndrome marker) and cleft lip. I found this really a useful addition for expanding pre-existing knowledge. For those of you wanting a break down, the content consists of: 1. Why: Fetal Heart Ultrasound. 2. How: Technical Aspects. 3. How: Anatomic Ultrasound Correlations. 4. How: Conducting the Examination and it's pitfalls. 5. First trimester cardiac scan and study. 6. Why: Critical cardiac pathologies not to be overlooked. 7. When: Fetal morphological examination after the delivery of a cardiopathy. 8. Points to remember. Overall, a really fantastic text which is very well presented to suit many levels with some handy tips for perfecting your scanning technique or recognising both common and obscure pathology. I definitely recommend this.
