A 20th century composer writes about another 20th century composer. Simpson appreciates Nielsen's musical vigor and forward-looking keys within movements. He is not atonal, but, he does not have Romantic tendency to center his symphonies in one key. They are centrifugal, easier to listen to than Simpson's monstrosities. Wish I could read music, I would appreciate analysis more. Very musically technical.

This is really lazy musicology. Robert Simpson was an opinionated jerk, obsessed with the idea of the Classical symphony, who would literally insult anything that didn't fit into his perfect little models, of which the only thing he has anything to say about is harmony. Nielsen meets his exacting standards (everyone else apart from Beethoven, OH, OH, BEEETHOVEN) is literally insulted. There is a moment in Nielsen's 'Symphony No. 6' where he did something a little different. This moment is viciously derided by the author as a symptom of Nielsen's heart attack. Simpson's music is as arrogant, obvious and pompous as his prose.
