Review # 1 was written on 2014-08-26 00:00:00 Johannes S�re I have undoubtedly read this book in far greater depth than any passive reader, because I was its translator. Prof. Feil writes in a rich and ponderous academic style, and it was a formidable challenge to render it into readable English. But it was an invaluable experience, and in the process I came to appreciate Schubert's genius as well as the author's, often having to pound out a passage on the piano to fully comprehend what was being said about it. I was privileged to meet Prof. Feil in Tübingen shortly after signing the translation contract. By chance, my German relatives, whom I was visiting at the time, knew him personally and invited him over for a glass of wine. I was nervous about my spoken German, but he quickly put me at ease. We finally came around to talking about the book, and at one point he leaned over and said (in German) in what seemed an ominous tone, "I want you to know that there isn't a sentence in that book that I didn't deliberate over." Gulp! He's going to tell me he wants it translated word for word. "Now here's what I want you to do," he continued. "I want you to read the book straight through, fall in love with Schubert, and then say to yourself, 'Somehow I've got to convey that to the Americans!' Then rewrite the book." Oh, bless him! Of course I couldn't do as he said. The work was far too complex. But he and my editor (Reinhard Pauly, Amadeus Press) were wonderful to work with, and together we pulled it off. Initially, when I asked Prof. Feil who his target readers were, scholars or the general public, he said both. I question whether it is possible to satisfy both readerships — the book is highly technical. But I recommend it to classical musicians and scholars and serious fans of the song cycles. Prof. Feil's enthusiasm for his subject is contagious.

Review # 2 was written on 2018-08-09 00:00:00 Jimmy Horrocks I picked up this book at the Little Free Library in Glacier Basin Campground at Rocky Mountain National Park. So, I'm the wrong audience. Enough said.
