This small coffee table book has a nice collection of modern Australian (Melbourne and Sydney) homes, most of them fitting into an environment of Victorian terraced houses. Presented with a brief description, usually a small plan and a collection of photos it makes for good browsing. Less information than you'd get in an Architectural magazine article but more information than you'd get in an Interiors magazine. At the end one photo is rotated 90 deg to confuse you and two plans are included that have nothing to do with any of the buildings included here... but I expect their proof-reading budget was tight. Having moved back to the UK from Australia the first thing that struck me was the fact that by European standards these are not small at all. As such you end up looking at them and imagining how nice it would be to have so much space... and, in many cases, obviously another home that would have all your clutter in it. These are generally all city pied-a-terres. The ones that are not, have only selected parts shown... which is a disappointing omission since the title tempts you to imagine clever storage solutions. That said it's a good collection of Aussie terrace conversions from the 2000's and good to see what proper open plan living and good use of basic materials can do for you. A nice reminder of aspirational Australian homes from my time down under.
