Review # 1 was written on 2012-11-18 00:00:00 Andrea Wonderhem A book that seems to have never got any traction in the psychological community. The ideas embedded within it are interesting and I believe may be helpful in terms of therapy. THe idea is that emotions are important experiences we have which inform us of what is going on in the world. Emotions are also transient and only become distressing when we have a reaction about having an emotion. For example, when we get angry about being angry - this is considered problematic. When we get ashamed about being embarrassed - this is also a problem. Overall the ideas are interesting. The problem I have with this book is the style of writing and the author in general. He invokes Kuhn and the philosophy of science often. He fails to realize that his current theory may also be flawed in some ways. He instead tends to invoke how angry he is about the powers in psychology that prohibit his theory from being testable and attaining adherents. He is clearly frustrated and bitter about the difficulties he has encountered. It is interesting he is so angry about the power structure he confronts because his version of therapy is largely informed by the therapist serving as an expert or what he calls "tutor." |
