Review # 1 was written on 2011-07-23 00:00:00 Christian Goetz A nice survey of the century (the thirteenth) surrounding the years when this ten-kilometer stretch of lagoons and salt marshes on the Provençal coast became a part of the French crown, thereby giving that kingdom a toehold in the Mediterranean. Written as a synthesis of already-published scholarship (as of 1986). The section on Aigues Mortes itself seems pretty solid (four stars), but the background section on the Mediterranean context is pretty antiquated (two stars). Has any medieval environmental historian taken a crack at this region? If not, they should. |
