A proper textbook this one, which admittedly I only really dipped in and out of. Excellent research and information. Brilliant illustrations and picture plates. Extensive, detailed. All you could wish to know topographically, geographically and historically about the Broads in Norfolk and reaching into Suffolk.

I picked up this book to answer a question - how were the broads formed? I had heard 'peat digging', but wanted to understand better what this meant. So I started flicking through searching for the information I needed, which I found, but became so captivated by the writing style and the way Brian Moss has brought together so many different strands of study to present a clear and coherent picture of the development of the Broads and the larger Broadland area (not the same as the Broadland District Council area!) that I continued to read through the rest of the book and have now started again from the very beginning. Brian Moss has clearly studied a wide range of sources, which he not only references but makes a short comment about to indicate the kind of content therein and sometimes the dryness or otherwise of the read. He has used elements of chemistry, biology, botany, geology, history, social history, environmental studies, geography, politics and many more distinct threads to weave a comprehensive picture of the various factors which interplay in the unique landscape of the broads; affecting the landscape of the past, present and future. A very impressive book for these reasons and most of all, it is readable! Thank you very much to Brian Moss, who cannot be thanked directly as he passed away in 2016.
