This is a comprehensive and readable account of nature conservation in the UK during the last few decades. The overall context is laid out first with the politics and institutions involved detailed and discussed along with all aspects of the UK's natural environment. The remaining chapters then detail how this has been lost and disturbed through industrial, agricultural and other practises. Marren goes on to discuss how these have been managed in recent years and how the growth of nature conservation has been driven by the public and media to be a major concern for all levels of society. Unlike other nature conservation works Marren also discusses both the successes and failures of nature conservation practises and how these can be improved on as well as looking forward to what may arise in future and how this would or should be dealt with. A good all round book for anyone with an interest in nature conservation, this book provides a very good basis on which to look at specific issues in more detail.

Terrible. In effect, comparing this book with his amazing books from the 80's, is the reality of my negativity. Definately one that was an after thought to compliment a wonderful TV series.
