This history of late medieval France is very readable and gives a sense of the constant internal warfare and raiding that took place during this time period. It is a good antidote to a romantic view of life during the middle ages. The writing and translation are very clear. There is a good exposition of the concept of feudalism and how it worked. The maps, genealogical tables and chronology are helpful. Duby argues that the birth of the modern state took place in the early thirteenth century rather than at the end. He also makes interesting distinctions between developments in the north and the south.

A fine and extremely readable introduction to medieval France. Most of the first half of the book describes the various levels of French society during this era, and is followed with a narrative political history. The emphasis is on power relationships and the various struggles within and between factions, especially the Church and the armored aristocracy. The reigns of the various kings is also covered, as are the many differences between northern and southern parts of the country. A person who intends to seriously study the development of the French state needs to start with the Middle Ages and this work is an excellent place to start.
