Review # 1 was written on 2011-03-27 00:00:00 Fred Schnee This is a gorgeous, coffee-table type book about Topkapi Palace. The photos are clear and they have not suffered from printing, and you get a sense of the scope of the land surrounding the palace, the views from it, and the inside and outside of the architecture. So much light! So much beauty! I truly hope I can go to Turkey someday. The accompanying text was informative and gives a good sense of the importance of this palace in the Ottoman empire, which people contributed significant elements, and how it changed over time. I thought it was interesting that weddings took place in the Room of Circumcision (a gorgeous room with beautifully patterned blue tile, but perhaps not something you'd expect on a wedding invitation!)

Review # 2 was written on 2012-09-11 00:00:00 Chris Morris It seems this book doesn't know what it wants to be. Light-hearted satire? Radical, subversive, serious info? It goes back and forth between being a little silly and pretty darn preachy. And then out of nowhere it talks about recording artists doing "backmasking" and I can't tell if the author really thinks The Beatles put hidden backwards messages in their music or if this is meant as humorous satire. A frustrating read, to say the least.
