Decent erotica, but disappointing on the "romance" front Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS. "Winning Hand" - 6/10 PROS: - I liked that there wasn't instant, gut-wrenching attraction or lust. Not that there's anything wrong with stories that incorporate that, but oftentimes affection and desire sneak up on people, and it's nice to read a story in which it happens that way. (see cons below also) - Enjoyed reading about a character who's mute and communicates through touch. - Good development of a tentative friendship between the two main characters before they get physical. CONS: - (This isn't necessarily a con; it's just an observation) Nothing that really fits into the "fantasy" genre other than fictional cities/regions and languages. - Significant editing issues that seemed worse in this novella than in the second. "To" instead of "two," "through" rather than "thought," the wrong character's name here and there, etc. - No explanation of one character's background, not even a suggestion as to the reason behind his psychological trauma. - Tiamann's development of speech didn't unfold as gradually as I expected it to. He's entirely mute at the start, and within a period of a few weeks, he goes from total silence to rather convincing bedroom talk. - Didn't quite buy the speed at which the characters' feelings develop into love. It happened too quickly, and with too little exposition concerning their feelings, for me to find it plausible. I know, I know, this is fiction, and fantasy at that. Okay. "Playing with Fire" - 4/10 PROS: - Fascinating and beautiful fantasy world described in intricate detail. - Intriguing, mysterious storyline. - The sex is described well. I didn't find it particularly titillating because of the lack of emotional involvement, but it's plentiful and erotic. CONS: - One of the characters is hideous emotionally. - Didn't enjoy the sex and power games, particularly the constant manipulation. - Lots of sharing of sexual partners with no emotional connection. The majority of the sex scenes take place with dubious consent on the part of at least one of the participants; and although they're not described, several rapes are mentioned in passing. - There is a mention of one of the character's "secrets" at the end of a chapter, and that's the sort of thing that intrigues me enough to keep reading even when I'm not really enjoying the story. But the mention comes over 1/3 of the way through the book. Other readers with tastes similar to mine might give up before getting to the intrigue. Overall comments: If you're looking for erotica, this might be a good choice for you. Michael has certainly proven that s/he knows how to write a steamy sex scene. If you're looking for emotional, romantic attachment, others of Michael's books (the Between Friends series, for example) would be a better bet.

I really loved the two novellas released under this single title. Male-male romance, well written and with great characters. A delicious read that I couldn't put down. Highly recommended!
