The author, Eun-hee Choung , lives in South Korea and writes many picture books. Minji's Salon is a picture book that depicts Minji, the main character, as a young Korean girl who is interested in all things beauty related. In the book, Minji's mom goes out to the salon to get her hair done. Minjin stays at home and opens her own salon for her pet dog. She explores different hairstyles on her dog and uses her imagination to create a master piece at the end. Minji is a playful character and the illustrations in the book really show that. Illustrations are also colorful and detailed, which add to the storyline since the book is illustration-heavy. Few words are used on each page to deliver the story. Not only does the text portray a little girl using her imagination, it also challenges the readers to use their imagination to think about what is happening in the story and what might the characters be thinking or saying. This book can be used as a read aloud for primary grades. After reading the story, the students can choose a page in the book and create dialogue or thinking bubbles for each character. The theme of imagination can be discussed. It'll be a good book to use when encouraging students to use their imagination and think creatively.
