Review # 1 was written on 2011-06-09 00:00:00 Mary Ellen Guimomd Smudge Bunny is one of the best rabbit-themed storybooks I have encountered. The story offers gentle lessons about rabbit care and proper ways to treat pets in general; humane educators will want to make it a part of their curriculum'especially around Easter. Smudge Bunny would also make a fine Easter basket gift'instead of a real bunny, natch. Issues included within the story are: the giveaway of bunnies for Easter, the right and wrong ways to pick up and hold a rabbit, appropriate cages for rabbits, and the abandonment of domestic bunnies into the wild. Unlike the fates of many abandoned and "Easter pet" bunnies, Smudge's tale has a happy ending'and even better, it's based on a true story. Rabbit fans will be pleased to see the list of bunny care tips at the back of the book'especially the one highlighting spay/neuter.

Review # 2 was written on 2014-03-06 00:00:00 Paul Stevens Grandfather's Journey is the 1993 Caldecott-winning picture book about the homesickness his grandfather had for both the U. S. and Japan, depending on which country he was in. Say says he shares this same homesickness for both countries with his grandfather. Lavishly illustrated/painted, it is Say's biographical tribute to his grandfather. It's an illustrated story more than a comics-style "sequential art" story the one-time photographer had so admired as a young man. I imagined some of the paintings were based on family photographs. It's short, and sweet, and Say says he really came to know his grandfather in the two-year process of making the book. I read the 20th anniversary edition at the 25th anniversary of its publication.
