Review # 2 was written on 2015-06-03 00:00:00 Michael Harris Short stories. I wasn't wildly enthusiastic about this collection. Some of the stories had flat, tell-y characterization. Others were using nonlinear storytelling methods to disguise weaknesses in motivation or plot. The title story, in which the first crew to go to Mars is basically treated as a reality TV show, has both these weaknesses, which is a pity, because I'd love to have seen that premise done well. I enjoyed "Clownfish," about a man who would be living the life of his dreams if he didn't keep thinking a fish was mocking him, and "The Golems of Detroit," which drops golems into a factory story. The voice was good in "Gus Dreams of Biting the Mailman," but stoner philosophizing is still stoner philosophizing. |
