Here's another joyous book from my elementary school days. I have not read it since but still remember it fondly. George is a stegosaurus who save two children from a rattlesnake. We discover that stegosaurus (stegosauri?) are not extinct. They are just very shy. The two children and George becomes friends. It helps that George can talk and he wags his tail when he's happy. There are some vivid descriptions of rural life and ranch living that were exciting to this city kid. However it was George who won me over. This is mostly a book about friendship and tolerance. George survives this book and a sequel and I like to think that George is out there somewhere imitating a mountain and waiting for the right kid to come along to be friends with.

Featured in a grandma reads chapterbook session. This was my first purchase from Scholastic Books way back in the day. I was over the moon about this book. When I found an ancient copy I determined that my group needed to hear this antique story - all of them were practically birthed as paleontologists since the world has come leaps and bounds further in dinosaur knowledge. So they were quick to point out the errors of the 1955 facts on fossils and the current standing on all things stegosaurus. Still, they were patient with the story and the odd ups and downs of the narrative flow. Which does end mighty abruptly. One of those where you close the book, shake your head hard, and re-read those last few pages. Yep. It ended. Right there. Weird. (I get over those moments by quickly adding an amended ending, "if this were my story I would have . . .") It had been so long since I had read the tale, I only had memory of a few of the story's larger points, and characters. It was fun to reacquaint myself with the whole package. It did surprise me how simple the story was. My memory had embellished it. . . . The group in after-discussion thought an even more interesting tale would be to have the grandkids of the Joan and Joey come back to the ranch and meet up with George. . . .
