In an age where Napoleon is seen as a military dictator and, for the more vapid, a proto-Hitler, Martin offers another view. This is Napoleon as frustrated thinker and writer, a man who longed to be a great author but settled on military and political glory, making Europe his canvas. It is an uneven account, but several chapters really sing, particularly Napoleon on St. Helena and his peculiar love life. This is a good antidote to current Napoleon biographies and explains why he cast a particularly strong spell over artists and philosophers more than historians and politicians. It is worth noting that his greatest fans were often writers: Hugo, Stendahl, Goethe, Balzac, Thackeray, etc. For those writers who disliked him, such as Tolstoy and Kundera, he also casts a long shadow over their work.

Good work. Good translation. But where are the women? This is Roger's story. Fair enough. For the queens, read my review of Jacqueline Alio's Queens of Sicily 1061-1266 and its supplement, Sicilian Queenship.
