Review # 1 was written on 2012-02-25 00:00:00 Gregory Buss Nothing says you are a Jacobean Era woman who knows how to get things done like dressing up like a man, hanging out in taverns, playing matchmaker for your friends and generally outwitting all the men in your circles. Moll Cutpurse, the titular character, is an intriguing and atypical one. Also, this is one of the few Renaissance/Jacobean comedies I can think of where a woman is discussed by men not only in terms of marriage, sex or money. Sure the men describe her fearsome visage and declare her a monster, but that is mostly because they can't categorize her - is she a man or is she a woman, they debate. She is awesome. Read Roaring Girl and you will certainly agree. and are also good, fun, city comedies with a healthy helping of plotting.

Review # 2 was written on 2016-08-19 00:00:00 Michael Jamison The Roaring Girl and The Shoemaker's Holiday are among the best of the city comedies. I definitely recommend this collection for anyone interested in Renaissance comedy (especially since Shakespeare never did city comedies, so you get an entirely different flavor here) or Renaissance London. And of course the Oxford editors have done, as always, a fabulous job with background information and notes for clarity.
