Written by a community corrections officer with over 25 years experience dealing with child molesters, this valuable book takes an emotionally tough subject and presents it in with objectivity and clarity. Written mainly for the families, relatives and acquaintances of convicted sex offenders, this book is not about how people become child molesters, but about how convicted child molesters communicate and operate, and what people must do in order to keep them from molesting again. Many case studies are provided to illustrate the points being made. One thing I learned is how intentional child molesters are in setting up not just their victims or their families but all those in their social networks. How they use denial, secrecy, manipulation and deception to “groom” those in their families, workplaces, churches and communities, often over a period of years, so that people cannot recognize their real aim and intention: to molest children. In the Rorschach test, everyone sees the beautiful woman, not the witch. This “grooming” may continue on well after a convicted sex offender has been released back into society. I also learned that there is no such thing as a “cure” for this kind of sexual deviance. Traditional confidentiality cannot apply in relationships with these offenders. People must hold them accountable through clear and explicit communication, clarification of roles and expectations, maintenance of self discipline and vigilance, a healthy skepticism, and a willingness to be confrontational. The best ones to ensure that molestation does not happen again are not members of the criminal justice system, but everyone who knows and deals with the convicted sexual offender on a regular basis.

Every parent should read this. It sharpens our ability to understand how perps get access to children and once they have access, how they lure them. The subject makes this a very difficult book to read, I won't lie. Leberg uses non-academic wording so it's approachable for us layfolk. A careful reading of this can potentially save more kids from this travesty. I wish this topic was included in parenting classes. Parents can easily get access to the signs of abuse in children. For teenagers, some parents are learning how to spot suicidal thoughts so they can prevent that. This book teaches how to spot behaviours in potential child molesters. It doesn't encourage witch hunting, but it does give practical tools to protect more at risk children before something tragic happens.
