Using photos of the region, extensive research on the author, and correspondence with the author's friends, Patton pieces together Flaubert's life, the places he called home, and the inspiration for his well-known works. While this wasn't a fascinating read, it was informative, well-researched, and brought Flaubert's Normandy to life in a way that really filled me with the most bittersweet kind of nostalgia.

I really love well-written travel books. This is one of them where nothing really dramatic ever really happens because instead of daring exploits, the writer explores in depth village life in Corsica fleshing out the mores and values of the locals all while having an underlying character the writer is trying to understand. As Corsica is my favorite vacation place, I was engrossed to learn more about the history and traditions that I had missed when I visited many years ago.
