Review # 1 was written on 2014-08-06 00:00:00 Lenard Williams A quick short read covering the basic ebb and flow of WW1. I chewed through it in three hours, dragged out by the Google Mapping and Wikipedia reading that it provoked. For the first time, I got the sense of the "world" at war: the domino cascade of international alliances bringing more and more states into the conflict, the scope of conflict because of the geographic placement of the combatants on the map (and their territories), the staggering size of the Western Front (from Switzerland up to the coast!), and the enormous waste of life in moving the line a few miles. Don't read this for a nuanced analysis, it's just too brief, but for an overview that I could follow: perfect. |
