I really liked this one. It is Titled as "A companion for the Journey of Unknowing." Really I would say that it's a "companion to" a sort of "cliffnotes" for the ever popular, yet sometimes hard to navigate "Cloud of Unknowing". The author of There is a God, There is No God basically breaks down the intemidating work of "The Cloud of Unknowing" that was written by an unknown mystic in the 4th centery and makes it more managiable to today's readers. It doesn't talk down to the reader at all. If you haven't done a lot of reading on mystism, this one might be hard to get into. John Kirvan still uses a lot of the "spiritual" language that uses a lot of metphores for things that can't be put into words. He does a great job of making the Unknowing a real concrete concept that is easily grasped if you can wait through all the words. If you are just starting down the spiritual path, I would wait on this one, but if you are tip-toeing along, scared to jump into the ancient mystics, this is a good steping stone.

Great book. Super helpful analysis on what our culture is missing by denigrating the role of ritual in our lives and communities. Sincerity's logical end, in the absence of ritual, is the total autonomy of the individual to the exclusion of the community. We need shared social space and our culture's prioritization of individual expressions of sincerity preempts our ability to connect across differences. This also affects our art, architecture, and music. Sincerity and individual expression are important, but they cannot be all-important. Ritual helps to connect us to the past as well as to our present community and permits us to connect with future generations as well. Well worth the time.
