I think some of the stories in this book could be interesting, but the writing is so bad. When the author doesn't know all the facts, he offers his own opinion or asks the reader what he thinks happened. The last section of the book has to do with religious cults. Skip this book, it is a waste of time.

I really liked the idea of this book. An "anecdotal history" can give you glimpses of the past that you never find in more academic histories. Unfortunately, the book tends to get bogged down in places where the author goes off on a tangent that seems to take him far a field from his original subject. I am still not sure what Aztec religion has to do with Angelique Mott's experiences on Isle Royale and Chapter 6 would be a lot shorter if the author hadn't shared if his personal views on a number religious and cult groups that he does little to tie to the experiences of women living in the Great Lakes region. Maybe he makes these connections in his first book, but I am not interested in finding out. Over all, I found the book to dwell a bit too much on the sensational for my tastes. In addition, some of his comments and conclusions seemed less than appropriate for experienced historian who has taught at the university level.
