Review # 1 was written on 2019-02-13 00:00:00 Casandra Franklin Good basic teaching resource (#6 in Come Look with Me series) for guided learning by teachers or parents with small groups or individual children in the primary grades. Thirteen images of varied art works (listed below) with questions and text to be used selectively by the teacher. Recommends to introduce only two or three art works at a time if using in class. I liked the selection of art works: The Red Room by Henri Matisse Buffalo Mask by Boulé artist of Ivory Coast Horse Head Theatre Mask by Pablo Picasso The Yellow Cow by Franz Marc Backyards, Greenwich Village by John Sloan The Brooklyn Bridge: Variations on an Old Theme by Joseph Stella Stone City, Iowa by Grant Wood Jitterbugs I by William H. Johnson The Flower Vendor (Girl with Lilies) by Diego Rivera Autumn Leaves No. 2 by Georgia O'Keeffe Landscape (stained glass window) by Louis Comfort Tiffany Muhammad Ali by Andy Warhol Blue Territory by Helen Frankenthaler |
Review # 2 was written on 2020-07-19 00:00:00 Nicholas Cahalane The preface states "the attempt is not to create a comprehensive survey of art," but even considering that, I didn't feel this covered a wide enough range of modern art. There could be a second volume including many of the well-known styles that have been omitted - surrealism, op art, impressionism, art deco, cubism, etc. As is usual for this series, the questions are good and the brief historical/biographical information is just enough for kids. |
