Review # 1 was written on 2017-09-24 00:00:00 John Sumner One of those books that's both for everybody and not for everybody at the same time. It's also tiny. What is it with libraries and tiny books lately? How are we shelving them? How do they not get lost in the shuffle? No matter. I found this, I read it, I loved it. Here's why: "There are numerous unexpected revolutionary weapons. The human voice is a great revolutionary weapon. Slingshots, snowballs, and mud have aided many rebellions. Soap bubbles and pancakes can be effective tools. Silence is a revolutionary device" (26). Sold to the lady in black with red shoes. Pick up for your collection if your library supports communities with strong social justice movements, or small ones trying to get off the ground. |
Review # 2 was written on 2010-03-09 00:00:00 Harry Birk i was just complaining about poetry to amanda, after reading "180 more" and being turned off by the high levels of pretension & casual sexism. then i went home and read this book and it made me feel about 100 times better. THIS is why i liked poetry--the wingnuts trying to capture an elusive moment! my favorite part was the account of sparrow and the unbearables protesting the offices of the new yorker for being too safe in their poetry choices, and leading the crowd in a chant that went: "NO MORE SESTINAS/ABOUT BALLERINAS!" amen (even though i love sestinas) |
