Review # 1 was written on 2011-09-11 00:00:00 Giorgio Pettinari I loved this book. It is a sampling of women's writings from the frontier interspersed with wild and everyday frontier stories told by the author. All are hung over a loose framework of chapters such as "Strong-Hearted Indian Women" and "Whiskey, Oysters, and Wild Wimmin." The author did a wonderful job of painting a colorful picture by including stories from women white, Native, African-American, single, married, young, old, independent and traditional while also including stories across a great geographic spread (today's American West) and time (first settlers through the 1910 or so). Many of the women's stories take place in Oregon and Washington, where I live, and I can't wait to find out more about how these women's lives effect the places we live today. One example is Mother Joseph, who as the first architect in the Northwest "established more than two dozen hospitals, academies, Indian schools and orphanages," often with her own tools, and helped to found Providence St. Vincent's Medical Center, Oregon's first hospital. Another that captured my attention was Biddy Mason, who was born into slavery but eventually became freed, financially independent (she had a fortune of over $300,000 sometime just after 1884) and one of the first African-American women to own property in L.A. even though she never had any formal schooling. ()
