This nonfiction book is good for kids 5-13. This is a comprehensive detailing of everything Civil War: dates, locations, weapons, clothes, even food! This is the most complete and succinct way for children to get a snapshot of the Civil War from all sides. The book does not follow a plot, but is well organized based on subjects listed above. Additionally, there are brilliant images that detail each individual point and help the reader to create a mental image of the entire Civil War. My younger brothers are 7 and 9 and are completely obsessed with the Civil War. They have worn this book out fact-checking and showing their friends. It is slightly above their reading level, but the images and large print help them to put all of the pieces together. This book would be useful in both a literature/reading class and a history class, for children from elementary through high school. The only thing I thought could be improved is that the entire book is in black and white. While historically accurate, lots of children I know are not as engaged by a fully black and white printed book.

Covers the period well with good helpful guides on the times and practices. The battles could have been in better chronology
