The social story bible. If you are contemplating writing social stories for your child do check in with this inspirational book first. Don't be put off by the elaborate introduction which can make the task seem daunting but use the stories either as inspiration for your own or adapt these to personalise. The most recent editions all come with digital or cd versions of all the stories for you to adapt. The secret of success is to personalise, explain in a way your child can access and read or at least check in with many times with the child before the situation you are trying to improve the child's understanding of. I often encourage schools and parents to start with section 4... Making a book about me and setting out the idea of "Fort Able" But for older and able students the first section on change is a really powerful place to start. There have been many imitators and authors inspired by Carol Gray and if you are thinking of posting a "social story " on line for others to share, do be careful. Carol has trademarked the term "Social Story" in an attempt to prevent the promulgation of stories that posit potentially misleading or confusing information for the AS child. Top tip from Carol Gray ..... Write success stories alongside social stories... And make the file fully accessible to the child. My top tip. For able pupils link to the idea of a science experiment...." We can change it if it doesn't help." And recruit the pupil as an investigator into the problem. However though "not working" may mean the story needs tweaking in some way... Inadequate information, wrong emphasis, too complex, wrong problem... We have assumed problem is.... X .... But it's really ...y For others " not working "may simply mean that the story needs much more rehearsing, practice and exposure to become embedded. This could be as much as everyday for 3 months! Or longer....

I can't tell you how fast I jumped at the opportunity to review this book! I have loved Carol Gray and Social Stories for years and am so thankful for teachers and therapists who have helped me write stories for my son on a variety of topics. With these resource, I can definitely take it to the next level. Not only can I use the stories in the book as they are, I can also modify them for specific situations using the included CD, or I can follow the 10-step tutorial in the beginning of the book to write my own custom social stories. My son and I have actually read sections of it as part of our bedtime routine and have been able to refer back to them when we encounter a challenging event during the day. Just recently, he has been having more difficulty with handling games, and I was able to print out the relevant stories to be read before games are played both at school and at home. Such an incredible tool to have at hand when it is needed!
