Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would love to hear Mary Ann's side of the story. Have given copies to friends and will continue to do so.

I enjoyed this book. I thought Sonnichsen did a good job of letting us know what was fact, what was maybe fact maybe not, and what was just plain legendary fiction while telling a topically limited tale of Judge Roy Bean's life in the last half of nineteenth century Southwestern United States, all with a bit of subtle wry humor. It also made me think about how our glamorized version of the old west really disguises the truth about life then. It was hard and mean, and the reality of its fierce independence was really a lookout for yourself first, last and always, a screw your neighbor if it makes you a few bucks, mentality. And it made me think about how our capitalist culture springs from these roots, positing selfishness, greed, and aggrandizement as the basis for societal growth. This is not a point the book consciously makes. It was, after all, written in the 1940s when "self-reliance" and "initiative" were seen positively as unquestioned virtues, ignoring the means used and without much thought about the consequences for those who didn't win the individual "initiative" game - the less lucky, the less skilled, the ones who got shot. It was a world of survival of the most devious, of those willing to do whatever it took to attain "success."
