We watched the Broadway musical of the Newsies last week and followed it up with a Squilt music lesson today. We enjoyed learning more about the true history behind the musical/movie I grew up with and that my girls now love.

Kid Blink Beats the World is an entertaining picture book for ages 6 and up. Kid Blink is the leader of the newsies of New York who go on strike agains Pulitzer and Hearst, as the book says, "over a penny". This story highlights a less discussed aspect of American history; the labor movement. It does so to an age group that would understand fairness and how the young boys would feel. They will connect to these young men in their fight for justice. The storyline is a great one for this age. The artwork is loose and comfortable and feels like the rough and tumble kids of old New York may have done it themselves. It matches the story of the book beautifully. However, one concern I had was that the boys do not necessarily take actions that would be deemed appropriate at times. They harass those attempting to resell the papers and act out in other ways that young children should not be behaving and should not be encouraged to behave. This is the only downfall to an otherwise brilliant book.
