One of the best books I've ever read about race was The Politics of Black Women's Hair by Althea Prince, and I'll admit I thought I'd be getting a similar book when I found Why Black Men Love White Women by Rajen Persaud on the bargain table at a big city bookstore. Sort of a personal-becomes-political sociological study. A quick scan of the concluding pages revealed some detail about the little-known but devastating Tulsa race "riot" of 1921, and I found that promising. Unfortunately, what I got was a poorly-written book-length essay of one man's opinions--offered as objective fact--about interracial dating. Persaud's prose leaves much to be desired. His love of unnecessary alliteration aside, there were just too many not-quite-right passages and downright mistakes ("tethering on the brink")--not to mention too much clunky exposition--for me to really get into this book. Add to that the fact that almost all the reasons he posits for black men's "love" of white women I have heard all my life from the mouths of old, racist white men, and what you get is almost pure claptrap. Although there are plenty of footnotes, there is no sociological research or verifiable fact to back up the many sweeping generalizations the author makes. I say "almost" pure claptrap because the author does bring up quite a few good points (the idea that black men and white women take a vacation from society through their relationship with one another could use a bit more fleshing out) but for the most part, its just an amateurish attempt at a serious subject. In 21st Century America, almost everyone has some experience with interracial romance, either in his or her own life or in close or extended family. Persaud deserves credit for taking on this subject--especially as it relates to the mixed-race heritage of African-Americans descended from rapist slaveowners, and the many psychological wounds such a history entails--but now someone with a few more academic and literary chops needs to take the baton and run with it. Alternatively, perhaps Persaud should write another book titled "Why I Think Black Women Are Awesome," and get a good editor.

When I first read this book I thought it nothing more than a woman hating read especially black women, I couldn't have been more wrong, it only enhanced my curiosity and confirmed what I was feeling all along. "We really need to wake up" (blkppl) loved it
