Review # 1 was written on 2018-11-07 00:00:00 Lou Kikos My mom gave this to me a few years back to help me to change my boorish ways. I'll let you know how it goes. Ok, update, about half way through I started to feel angry. I started to feel like the art of social graces might be synonymous with being judgemental and clinging to tradition rather than humanity. The them and us-es. I got over it. One of the stories I enjoyed seemed to not really fit the book subject matter. It was about the love for your dog and savoring things while they last. It was a sentimental story and pleasant as it was, I couldn't see how it spoke to social graces. Liked it none the less. Some of the stories reminded me of things that I see in friends that I amire. So, I feel mixed about the book, some reminders of sweet things in life, but also a lot of self-congradulatory conspiring to not be like the insipid of which they speak. |
Review # 2 was written on 2010-07-29 00:00:00 Todd Conwell I thought this was going to be social history, which would have been interesting. I'm not sure what it actually was, but it wasn't that. Sweeping generalizations about the vaguely-defined past? A review of stereotypes about Americans? I read the whole book and still don't know what the thesis is. |
