Humphreys' journal of the cruise of the U.S.S. Constitution's cruise of 1814-1815 is a gem of a primary source. Charles Stewart's actions against the HMS Cyane and HMS Levant is as the title suggests the Constitution's finest fight and underappreciated by historians. With Humphreys' account we have a firsthand quarterdeck account of the battle. The editor of the journal is Tyrone Martin who is the absolute best person to edit and comment on the journal. Captain Martin was a former commanding officer of the Constitution and wrote the authoritative history on the Constitution in and he comments the Humphreys was Stewart's former captain's clerk and no doubt was on the quarterdeck with Stewart logging the events for the report to made later. Therefore this journal is an eyewitness account of the battle and his observations of the quality of Royal Navy officers after the battle shows the war weariness, the effect of casualties on the officer corps had in the Royal Navy. These were not the cream of the Royal Navy's crop. The account had me engrossed and i read it quickly in one setting but will be going back to the account again.

I'm really excited that our book group chose a local author and that we'll get to have him join us at our meeting. I found the book to be well-paced with excellent dialogue. In contrast to "Matterhorn," which was written in Marine, the military terminology in this book added texture without making the meaning impenetrable. I would have loved a little more about his growing up and his parents, and perhaps how the experience affected the arc of his life. All in all, a really important perspective in a well-written, accessible book.
