I would have appreciated a bit more moralising from this book, but boy, was James Hardie a hell of an industry giant. This book piqued my interest when I finished the corporate unit in my law degree, and the lack of corporate accountability is just unfathomable in this country. The amount of things that they got away with, tearing families apart and sending people to their deaths, is truly beyond the pale. Coming from a journalistic perspective, this book was largely purely factual, and so I felt that there was a lot more commentary that could have been added to it. I was bowled over by the facts of the matter alone, to be fair- there was no responsibility taken for any of the crimes (and, lets be realistic here, crimes is the right word- if anyone walked out onto the street and poisoned thousands of people, they would be arrested) and it seems that the whole of the company (aside from their shutdown) got off reasonably scot-free. This book made my stomach turn, and I just wish it brought an indictment on these clearly deplorable facts in a little more of a tangible way.

I love Haigh's writing. He's one of the few journalists who can entice me to read whatever it is he's exploring, whether it's something I'm interested in or something I couldn't care less about. I'm addicted to trawling through old issues of The Monthly just to find articles he's penned. He has a subtle and mischievous sense of humour that sneaks in at the perfect moment, and he seems to dedicate his entire soul to the task at hand. It's rare to see such passion and interest in journalism.
