I wanted to add my supertiny, super cute dictionary! I got it for a couple of euros and never seriously used it in class because I have a wordtank, but it's super convenient. It's both directions (Japanese-English and English-Japanese) and first lists hiragana/katakana and then kanji. So not only does it give pronunciation, it also shows how to write it - no fretting if you don't know your kanji yet. In its 'how to', it shows how you can go back to the dictionary form from conjugated forms, and those meanings are explained in the back. In short, pretty much everything you may expect from such a small dictionary. Of course, if you want to read a Japanese text, you're going to need a kanji dictionary, but this is a very good help during conversations. Also worth noting are the short explanations. There are example sentences in the English-Japanese part (sometimes in the other part too), and both parts have notes on cultural peculiarities, such as levels of politeness or things that are different (when I randomly opened the book, it said 'milkman' and had a note that milk delivery is rare in Japan. Just to name something). The only note is that you should be familiar to the Japanese way of organizing a dictionary, and that you should at least be able to read hiragana.

I'm currently reading this but since it's a reference book I've moved it to my read shelf. I am glad I chose this one over the others that are like it - the Oxford one doesn't provide romaji, forcing the reader to know hiragana and katakana to look up words. On the flipside of this my attempts to look up words have been foiled because the words have been mixed characters (hiragana and katakana side by side) so it's quite difficult to decipher.
