Okay, so the cover is cheesy. And, the writing is rocky in the beginning. But, this is a wonderfully profound book. I read the entire thing with pen in hand, underlining sentences and starring the margins. It's that good. I have read countless parenting books (and lots of other nonfiction, for that matter) that go on for three hundred pages, endlessly repeating the same information - forcing me to skim and skip to the good parts. This is not one of those books. It is concise (126 pages) and meaningful and presents a refreshingly simple concept: that by connecting with our own spirits, we are better able to discover and honor who our children are. It is a powerful reminder that we are here to guide and understand our children - not force them to bend to our wills. It also shows that parents do not have to choose between domineering or permissive parenting styles. When we connect with our own spirits and honor our children's, we see our children more clearly and encourage them to become healthy and loving children, adolescents and (most importantly) adults. I highly recommend this book.

Excellent book on parenting. Very principled. Grace + truth / time = good parenting. "Soft on the person, hard on the issue. What does this look like? Grace establishes and maintains the quality of the relationship. Truth adds direction for the growth and structure of a child's behavior and performance. Grace lets a child know she is loved. Truth guides her on what to do and become. Parents who do well integrate both." "We are called to create and develop good relationships. We are here to bring God's offered love to the world. We protect, share, and grow this love by responsibility. Relationships is the reason for existence. Responsibility is the means to bring about and protect relationship." Cloud enumerates attachment/connection, responsibility, reality, competence, morality, spiritual life. I would read this book again.
