Despite the title, this book is more focused on US federal policy between the years of 1945-2000. The author looks at each presidential administration between those years and offers an overview of the policies that came about, the reasons why those policies were sought after, and how they might have affected the US economy and business. From this assessment, we encounter topics such as employment, inflation, taxes, trade, deficits, the value of the dollar, interest rates, and antitrust, which are all matters of federal policy that affect business, innovation, and growth. The author's thesis doesn't actually appear until the very last chapter, which is only a few pages long. The author claims that the stagflation of the 70s caused the US government to rethink it's economic policies. In effort to reverse stagflation, the author says the US government had to boost productivity in the economy, which favored the "information society" over mass production.
