Ironically, I received this book through my college's library. They have a little cart they put out regularly offering free books to anyone who wants them, and I, being an individual who cannot resist a free book, always takes at least one book from the cart. It's just a principle on my part. I grabbed this one because the title amused me more than anything. It's not about alien librarians, as I half-heartedly hoped, but professional burnout among librarians. Alas. That being said, I actually enjoyed this book. Not that this was a book written specifically for me, as I'm going into nursing, but I felt that I still gleaned some knowledge from it. I found the discussions of labor and the development of the concept of work ethic through history too be particularly interesting; I was not at all expecting to see the author quoting Marx or delving into the sociopolitical issues of capitalism. Still, the book was fairly short and probably would have been of more interest to, say, actual librarians. Fun side note: this was published in 1989 and shows its age when talking about technology, in my opinion. The general tone of the bit about computers is one of extreme suspicion. Fun passage quote: In a study of the effects of automation on special librarians, the programmers who were interviewed all reported personality changes related to increased use of computers in their work: "I'm impatient with unorganized, illogical people," and "I feel that my mind works like a computer now." Emphasis mine. Ahh, the early 90's, when everyone thought using computers was going to make us all turn into machines. Hilarious.
