We have 10 zillion interchangeable juvenile films about comic book heroes, but not one about Grigory Rechkalov (who I assume is in this book), an incredibly heroic Soviet fighter pilot who was first denied entry into the corps for an eye issue then went on to score 62 kills against the Nazis in WWII, seeing action on the very first day of the invasion and saving the life of a comrade in that first dogfight, subsequently having many near-death episodes, being named Hero of the Soviet Union -- twice -- and surviving it all and living all the way to 1990. Seriously? This is why Hollywood today is total garbage and you have to go with books, folks. KR@KY 2018 |
Review # 2 was written on 2018-10-31 00:00:00 William Rhinier This is an interesting book in a series of books. One forgets that the soviets were one of the main combatants of the Second World War. I had read once that 80% of German casualties were on the Russian front. It is no wonder that there were som many aces in the Soviet airforce. Something for them to be proud of. This book is full of statistics. Some of the tactics used and some personal histories of the fighter pilots. A very interesting read. |
