Not the most compelling read, but simple, rustic and charming as hell like the island itself. Good to know that Chincoteague stuck with the Union through the Civil War, even if - as the author suggests - it was largely due to economic need to keep the sales of oysters going to Phillie and New York. Loaded with hoary old anecdotes, though, like how in the early 1800's the islanders would have to go to the mainland for everything, including shoes. Whoever was going would take sticks cut to size for family members feet to buy them shoes around the length/size of the stick. Supposedly Eba Jester, part of one of the original twelve families or so that were the first to inhabit the island, got halfway to the mainland and then realized he had left the stick cut to the size of his own foot, so he rowed all the way home to get it - despite still being in possession of his very own feet at the time. nyuk, nyuk. But then again, he was named "Eba Jester", which is perilously close to "Ass Clown".

A very interesting read. I love Chicoteague Island and enjoyed reading about it's history. The writing style is entertaining and enjoyable. The only complaint I had was that the people of the island have similar names and occupations and it became difficult to figure out who was who. I wish there may have been a family tree to refer back to.
