This book actually only deserved two and-a-half stars, which I will explain in a moment. It was a fairly good book on an extremely interesting subject, and the author did an excellent job of finding many obscure and/or rarely seen images to illustrate his research, but it could and should have been even better. This particular area has been the subject of many books over the years, of varying quality, and it took some work to end up with a book this good. Having said that, I unfortunately have two serious complaints about the book's quality. First, the photo-reproduction left something to be desired- many of the images were unnecessarily dark and/or blurry, particularly in the case of the black & white photos. Modern technology (the book was published in 2006) should have provided a simple and effective remedy for little or no extra cost, and with only a modicum of extra work. Obviously, those of us who edit listings here on Goodreads spend a certain amount of time & effort editing cover scans and other images on a regular basis, and given that experience I simply do not accept that there is any excuse for this particular issue. Second, the reproduction in the appendixes of contemporary pamphlets and booklets illustrating uniforms, rank insignia, qualification badges etc., as well as some orders & decorations were not only so small as to be nearly useless, but were also rendered in the same low-quality black & white as the main part of the book. This would not be as annoying if it wasn't for the fact that the pamphlets/booklets were almost certainly originally printed in colour! In addition, there were any number of mostly inexpensive books published during the late Cold War era, specifically the 1970s & 1980s, featuring precisely the sort of full-colour illustrations to which I am referring- Uniforms Of The Warsaw Pact, for example. The present book is nice to have in my library, but I am damned glad I only paid US$12.50 for my copy rather than the list price- I would be quite annoyed if I had been unfortunate enough to pay US$34.95!!!

Very “inside baseball” St. Louis book- if the reader is from here, the reader will most likely appreciate the minute details shared. If one isn’t from here, this comes across a little dry due to so much data. However, it’s a good reference book. There are sprinklings of lovely vignettes of local lore throughout. Overall, this is an interesting book about how St. Louis is set up regarding street names and county boundaries.
