I like Joscha Bach, and I like cognitive science, philosophy and AI. And while I definitely took away many interests bits, ideas and even some technical knowledge, I felt like there should be books out there that give me a better introduction into the world of cognitive architectures/modelling. Bach's sentences are very dense and assume quite a lot of terminology. Additionally the book would be way more understandable if there was clearer structure: What is about to be said? How can we summarize what we just said? What concepts does this part built upon?... I was surprised about and especially interested in the parts where he talks about language. I started to skip subchapters towards the second half and don't regret it: It was a good first primer in cognitive science+AI and I am now more confident to read other works. But it wasn't the incredible thing I expected it to be. I wish I would've understood things more clearly.

This not so new synthesis is a reference guide rather a textbook. Gives a broad overview of all the things involved in AI. But author fails to pique interest but I feel it's more oriented towards university study rather than casual study.
