The chapters summarize a number of his digs at some of the most important historical sites in the region. He also discusses a number of other archeological digs in the region. Starbuck places historic sites into a perspective often lost in history books by relating the history to the current site and it's condition. he also describes what he found at each site and what it means to the reader. I found the book an easy and helpful read with lots of helpful illustrations. Not dry at all. My favorite quote was when he mentioned that if one only went by archeology, one might think that the opposing soldiers fought battles by throwing empty rum bottles at each other. I found this book highly interesting because it describes the archeology of the region from a professional's viewpoint. Arecheology, along with primary sources are the underlying basis for understanding the history of the region. Archeology provides very important forensic confirmation, because sometimes secondary and even primary sourecs get things wrong. One example that caught my eye was on page 134. There is a sign at the Lake George Battlefield Park identifying the location of a smallpox hospital. Yet he points out that there is no archeological evidence that there was indeed such a hospital at that location. I would recommend this book to any serious student of the region's history and to anyone interested in visiting the sites discussed. |
