Disappointing is the best word to describe this book. There are some who like to disparage such historical authors as Ambrose and McCullough for their appeal to the common reader. But isn't that the point, to make history palatable so that more will be willing to read and understand their own past? Unfortunately, Hudson's book is neither palatable nor appealing. It is clear the research is thorough due to the overwhelming grocery list of facts. Rather than focus on salient points to highlight arguments it is almost as if this was written to prove the extent of research (as it emanated from a PhD dissertation, this would make sense). Unfortunately within that litany of figures, there is almost no attempt to create a sense of time and place within the work (excepting the section on the Dominican Republic). Likewise the slim selection of maps were very poor and added no understanding to the work. To further highlight the loss of balance between history and writing quality, almost every page had a paragraph crammed full of sentences all starting with She then; She moved; She said; She went; She wrote. Stylistically it is like a speaker saying "um" so often that suddenly the whole focus of the audience centers on how may times "um" is said instead of the presentation itself. Jane Cazneau's life is so wide-ranging and interesting that it is a shame that this is how it is presented to students of history. If a woman's adventures in the early Republic of Texas, the Mexican-American war, and Cuban and Dominican Independence movements interest you then this is still a hard one to pass up. Otherwise I can't give this one more than two stars. Really a shame.
