This book's introduction and conclusion could have used more grammar editing and better formatting, but the insights provided into the life of Mary Joyce, a Wisconsin expatriate turned Alaskan adventurer, are superb. Ms. Greiner actually knew Mary Joyce, so even though the book could have used much additional editing before print, the book is highly recommended because it captures details gained from actually interviewing the main character. As for Mary Joyce's extant manuscript, "1000 Miles by Dogteam," which is reprinted in this book, it is amazing - it presents to us a proto-feminist, who was Catholic but not dogmatic, very sympathetic to the Inuits, and critical of the whites & Catholic missionaries forcibly trying to "civilize" the Inuits. Her dangerous trip on solo dogsled across the tundra is slightly mad, and her obvious love for life is inspiring. This is one of the great American memoirs.

Fascinating and adventurous woman. The book is almost entirely the dairy of her trip with a bit thrown in at the beginning and end of her life before and after the trip.
