Read this a couple of years ago, and just reread it (though I come back to it often anyway). Ives's life, as related by friends, family, composers, conductors etc., is interesting because it was so much more than music. There is something very noble about a man who composed without reward, on top of a demanding and successful (and indeed pioneering) life insurance career; and whose personality, earnest, humorous and rugged, shows what Chesterton termed 'the centricities of genius'. He wasn't an eccentric. An eccentric wouldn't have worked on Wall Street, and he wouldn't have been a dutiful, present husband (and father to his adopted daughter); he wouldn't have said, as he did, that he didn't want his family to starve on account of his dissonances. There was a firm, virtuous centre to Charles Ives, and that's why reading about him is so compelling.

I didn't know this would be just interviews with people who knew the composer. It was an interesting picture of a man who was a musical genius. I love his modern works using literary giants and old hymn tunes.
