The Prussian Porn of historiography. I adore it. Complete with the reliëf design on the cover. + Wir Dienen Deutschland + . the Bundeswehr's credo & Iron Cross logo capsule perfectly the military tradition of the German armed forces & stress how the qualities which were nurtured by innovative commanders such as Frederick the Great were abused by National Socialism. The relationship between the army command & its political masters, from king over Kaiser to Reichtstag, is regularly discussed in this light. On the one hand, they stand their ground while braving the most infernal fire. On the other hand, they attack with fury and initiative, as paraphrased in the Franco-Prussian War "let's see how big the towel is whose corner we grabbed" & as formalised in the Auftragingstaktik of the Wehrmacht. Training is an important subject in peacetime in this book, with the development of the fabled General Staff in tandem. Once the guns go off, there's some fabulous eyewitness accounts of the cavalry melées at Rossbach and the bayonet work among the farms near Mars-La-Tour.

This book was full of military information about the German military machine. The book had some dry points and others were more enjoyable than others. Overall a good book but very demanding.
