Review # 1 was written on 2020-03-05 00:00:00 Timothy Ceska I'm reading Samuel Pepys' Diary which is a loooooonnnnnggg read and borrowed this to read alongside, together with a biography. His Diary gives an intimate view, giving us a view of how he saw himself and how he seems to rush through life at breakneck speed. This collection of letters presents the public persona and is much more measured, how he wants the world to perceive him. |
Review # 2 was written on 2011-08-07 00:00:00 Ian Porter Margaret Oliphant, one of the most prolific writers of the Victorian era (she wrote, if I am correct, over 90 novels), approaches the writing of her autobiography in an almost modern, stream-of-consciousness way. Interspersed between more typical chronological narration are diary-like entries in which she lets her emotions shine through. The result is a unique, though perhaps difficult to swallow, look into the life of a woman whose dreams of relaxation and success were forever thwarted by money troubles, useless dependents, and tragic deaths. |
