Review # 1 was written on 2017-05-21 00:00:00 Douglas Brtalik A good read if you want to know the history of herbalism in the UK - which I did, since I'm writing a story with a herbalist heroine! It covers the ancient history, the history in Scotland in particular, with lots of fun anecdotes and some rather disgusting concoctions. It's not a guide to herbs or herbalism, it's what it says on the tin, herbalism in context. On the down side, it's also a bit of a homage to Napiers and to the author's daughter, who at the time of writing, was working in a senior post in the group. There's quite a lot of references to her from her clearly proud dad that are a bit distracting and frankly a bit off-putting, but if you can ignore them, this is a good readable history. And there's some really excellent original remedies from the early days of Napiers too, which add some excellent colour. |
