Since visiting Rùm for the first time in April, I've read anything I can find about the island's curious history. This book by Magnus Mangnusson provides a comprehensive history of Rùm & its inhabitants, from Pre-historic times through to the Clearances and the flamboyant decadence of the Bulloughs who owned Rùm until it was bought in the 1950s and turned into a National Nature Reserve for Scotland. Having seen the deer, wild ponies, feral goats & Highland coos for myself, it was fascinating to learn more about these animals' history on the island and their ecological impact. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone either planning a trip to Rùm or to those, like me, who have visited and fallen under its wild, rugged spell.

A lovely little book about life on the Aran Islands early 20th century. Traditional way of life explored. Synge really enjoyed, even loved, the time he spent there and the people he met and this really comes across in this book.
